You’ve probably already heard about the burnout. Many workers are so stressed, so fed up with their daily tasks that they experience severe fatigue and they are simply no longer able to function at work. This problem affects many people. However, it’s wrong to believe that only people suffering from a burnout are in a problematic situation related to their work.

Some people are so unstimulated by their work that they experience the opposite situation: they get deeply bored and have no task to accomplish. These people suffer from what we called a bore-out. For a long time, we associated the bore-out to the burn-out, not knowing how to call this profound boredom felt by a significant number of workers. Proof that the definition of the bore-out stills new, the website of the Douglas Institute still use this definition: « Some people, for example, use the term “burnout” when they are feeling bored with their employment and want to seek new challenges.»

Getting paid to do nothing, a dream?

If this situation looks like a dream for some people, it is quite different for those affected by this problem. In fact, many people are affected by this disease that can eventually lead to depression.

A Steptone study reveals that 32 % of European employees would be highly affected by boredom at work. The respondents indicated « spending at least two hours, if not all day, doing nothing. » In addition, spending his days killing time would be as bad for health as overwork.

Indeed, there’s nothing funny about wasting time at work. The employee has no stimulation and doesn’t feel appreciated at its true value. He has no desire to get up every morning and go to work. The longer the situation persists, the more health impacts are significant.

This situation is hard to manage for people suffering from a bore-out since it is rather frowned to confess to his boss or his entourage do not have enough work to do.

If you think you’re suffering from a bore-out, first, think about the situation. Is it a temporary situation? Are your days usually sufficiently occupied? Perhaps it is just a quieter period to pass. You could take this opportunity to improve your knowledge by doing research and readings. Another suggestion, why not ask your boss the permission to get a training!

If you recognize yourself in this situation, don’t hesitate to talk about it and ask for help. Remember that you are the master of your destiny and that your situation can improve.
